Caverns of Sonora

I had about 2 hours to kill on my way to San Antonio, so I checked my atlas and saw there were some caverns not too far off the interstate.  So I swung by, not expecting much since I had been to Carlsbad last week.

Wow!  Carlsbad won for being the biggest formations,  but hands down the Caverns of Sonora wins for the most beautiful and most intimate setting I have ever experienced.  Many of the formations had so little debris in them, they appeared almost clear like ice would.  And many white formations that were very spectacular.

Got to see two new kinds of speleothems.  One was called heliotites and the other was called fins.  Both are very rare and there were LOTS of them.  I was really impressed with this place.  My tour guide had worked there 27 years, and he really had a lot of passion still for his job and for the Caverns.  He was kind enough to spend some extra time answering questioins and pointing out extra stuff on the tour.
